Brass Theodolite With Telescope & Compass

This is an optical precision measuring tool used in land surveying, engineering and navigation.  It's telescope is used for sighting and magnification of distant objects.  

It's semi-circular arc with degree markings are used for measuring vertical angles (altitude).  A rotating base with a degree scale is used for horizontal angle measurments.
